Getting started in karting is an exciting journey—but if you’re new to the sport, one of the first big questions you’ll face is:
Should I buy a brand new kart or look for a used one?
Both options have their advantages. The right choice depends on your budget, experience level, and future goals. At Motorscape, we work with first-time drivers all the time, and here’s what we typically advise.
New Kart vs Used Kart: A Quick Comparison
Feature | New Kart | Used Kart |
Initial Cost | High – expect to pay premium for chassis & engine | Lower upfront cost |
Condition | Perfect, straight from factory | Varies – could have wear, hidden damage, or repaired frame |
Setup Requirements | May require professional tuning/setup | May come race-ready, or need repairs and adjustments |
Reliability | High – fewer issues | Depends on how well it was maintained |
Resale Value | Higher initial value, slower depreciation | Lower resale but lower investment risk |
What to Look for When Buying a Used Kart
Used karts can be a great value—but only if you know what to look for. Here are a few critical checks to make before you buy:
Chassis Integrity
Check for signs of damage, especially bends or cracks.
Ask if it’s ever been bent and straightened—while some repairs are acceptable, repeated straightening weakens the frame.
Look for weld marks which may indicate serious past damage.
Axle and Bearings
Spin the axle—does it move smoothly without wobbling?
Listen for grinding or resistance which could mean worn-out bearings.
Steering Components
Inspect spindles, tie rods, and steering column for play or misalignment.
Brakes
Test brake pedal resistance and check for hydraulic leaks.
Worn-out brakes can lead to costly repairs or on-track accidents.
Engine Condition
Request service records, dyno results (if available), or have a mechanic inspect it.
Seat and Mounts
Confirm the seat hasn’t been over-drilled or poorly mounted, which affects posture and safety.
Brand and Support
Stick to reputable brands like Kart Republic or Birel Art that have strong support networks and easy parts availability in the UAE. Do note that kart racing teams have their preferred kart brands.

So… New or Used Kart?
If you’re brand new to karting and unsure about the long-term commitment, a used kart in good condition can be a smart way to start—provided you get expert help to inspect it.
But if you want a clean slate, fewer headaches, and top-tier performance, a new kart from a trusted dealer is the safest and most reliable choice—especially if you're planning to race competitively.
